Seeds sown for garden plan
LOCAL green thumbs finally got their wish. After much toing and froing, Coffs Harbour City councillors have moved to approve a community garden on part of the Combine Street Reserve. The recommendation to Thursday’s council meeting to support the proposed granting of a licence to Coffs Regional Community Gardens Inc, pending approval from the Minister for Local Government, was amended on the advice of council staff to bypass the minister.
Combine St community garden plan
If Coffs Harbour City Council approves the suggested Combine Street site for a community garden for Coffs Harbour tonight, the project is likely to involve Landcare and Rivercare members as well as city gardeners and other community groups. Adam Curlis, the president of the Coffs Harbour Regional Community Garden Association, said the proposed site had an open drain through it, which they would like to see improved and it would take a while to get the garden up and running. In the long term they would like to see a mandala-style garden showing how to grow different vegetables in different seasons and possibly small individual plots.
Coffs garden to be decided
Four sites have been considered and assessed for a community garden in Coffs Harbour – an eastern section of the Combine Street Reserve identified as surplus to sporting needs, Englands Park, Coffs Harbour Showground and Brelsford Park. Council staff have recommended the Combine Street site, which is owned by council, because it is central to the city’s residential areas, offers a larger area of land and is not encumbered by constraints like acid sulfate soils, native title or potential soil contamination and in the future could make use of amenities and car parking to be developed in conjunction with future sports fields.
